REN Clean Skincare Review: Sensitive and Acne-Prone Skin Friendly?

Is this drugstore / higher-end skincare range gentle enough for problematic skin, while efficiently cleansing, moisturising and protecting your skin barrier?

Anyone with very sensitive, eczemic, acne-prone skin knows the predicament and hesitancy you feel being on the look out for a new go-to skincare products that are actually beneficial and not irritants. Spending hours or days even researching if it could potentially worsen your skin condition. Yes, I feel your pain!

I’ll be honest, I was quite wary of this range. The ingredient list is pretty extensive and not as simple, natural or minimal as I’d prefer. The mention of ‘parfum’ (naturally derived) and other ingredients are not reassuring to sensitive little me as it’s not my comfort zone. But for a review to hopefully help not only myself but others, I’ll take one for the team. I know, you’re welcome!

All REN products are non-comedogenic, meaning they won’t block your pores, which is a great start for acne-sufferers.

Evercalm™ Gentle Cleansing Milk: It’s a gentle cleanser that does the job. Cleanses without stripping your skin, we’re not in the Sahara! The only slight downside is the fragrance depending on how sensitive you are. It didn’t break me out or make me look like a tomato which is a plus! If you’re washing around your eye area that may be a concern or a slight issue you prefer a non-scented face wash. It also doesn’t claim to remove makeup so if you’re a higher maintenance gal, you’d be inclined to need an extra product to fully remove your makeup before using this as your cleanser.

2. REN Evercalm™ Global Protection Day Cream

Evercalm™ Global Protection Day Cream: I didn’t have high hopes but this is my newly found baby. If I could’ve given birth to it, I probably would – it’d save me indefinitely adding this pricey number to my shopping basket. It comes in a secure plastic pump dispenser but it doesn’t feel flimsy, it’s very travel friendly. The cream itself is scented (naturally derived) which is new for me, usually causing a reaction due to how sensitive my skin and allergies are. But this somehow dodged that bullet. It’s so moisturising, non-greasy whilst leaving your skin feeling plump, light but so hydrating for dry-skin sufferers; feeling like you’ve just gulped a glass and a half of water. I’ve tried many products that don’t work for my skin, so if you feel disheartened in finding a moisturiser that agrees with your skin, do try this – after checking the ingredient list for for any known allergens and patch test list any other product before use, to be triple sure and reassure you. This product doesn’t have SPF so remember to use your SPF over this moisturiser.

3. REN Evercalm™ Overnight Recovery Balm

REN Evercalm™ Overnight Recovery Balm

Price: £46 ($55)

Evercalm™ Overnight Recovery Balm: A lovely silky balm that is clinically proven to help repair the skin barrier after 15 minutes. I did feel a slight tingle upon application but I did have azelaic acid on as a base on my skin, so maybe it didn’t like the combination. An ingredient I try to avoid is almond oil as I have a severe food allergy to nuts, but its rare to also have a contact allergy to it so I thought I’d give it a whirl… I was repeatedly coughing in my sleep, I most have woken up at least 5 times just to cough then I’d immediately return back to sleep quite easily. I had quite aggressive episodes of coughing, which followed into the next day here and there then subsided. I’m not sure if it was due to a sensitivity to this product or I was randomly under the weather, but I’ve been hesitant to try it again so soon after. But when I do, I’ll keep you posted! I’ve heard many rave reviews about this product, so I was possibly just unlucky; don’t let my isolated peculiar incident put you off.

Finally, I highly recommend the Evercalm moisturiser, I’m so glad I found this little gem. The cleanser and overnight balm are great, possibly not best suited to my skin for the price point to repurchase. I know the price of REN products is quite stark, but trying out REN samples which are more affordable is less of a financial commitment.
