Greed: Does It Change You Or Reveal Your True Self?

I’ve witnessed the soul through human eyes entirely drowned by calculation and deceit. You question your own morality, am I the problem?
You realise they wouldn’t blink an eyelid at your existence, due to greed.
The callous nature, I found hard to fathom. The realisation took much longer to hit than I thought it would. My excuses would effectively present your glass half full. When in reality, I’m overcompensating. Why is that? When I flip the glass, it’s drier than the Sahara.

Disputing, like you know right from wrong. You’re despicable, so how could you ever judge them apart successfully? I can taste your bitterness a mile off, no stout could touch the surface.

Actions speak louder than words. Blood’s thicker than water. But is that always the case? Not for you. You’ve bled out a while before my eyes even met you. Hollow, your soul doesn’t gain once ounce of light. It fills you with dread, having to guide me off the scent must be exhausting, consuming work. But let me guess, if you knew you would’ve turned back time?
Back when greed was 50/50. Before you ever knew me.

You had me mistaken. Before I even met you, I checked the fine print. Didn’t tally with your portrayal of the truth. Consciously and continuously spewing lies, whilst your name’s printed for all to see as an honest man, taking a vow to always state and highlight the truth. How dishonest could you be? Thankfully we’re not playing deal or no deal honey, as all of your boxes contain nada. My intuition’s too sharp for your farce.

You think I’m the naive, blinded, green flower? Mate, I boiled your water just to subside the contamination levels. You missed a bit, or is that a leak?
Too hot in the kitchen? Or are you poorly? Seems like every time the truth raises its head, you somehow get the flu… I’m sure you know the best remedy, lying’s made you right as rain. If only I could bottle your deception… Oh wait, it’s running through my veins.

Youngest, oldest, prettiest, ugliest. Don’t be greedy now, you’re not all the above. Aw, you have the cookie cutter out especially? Too late, I’ve branded you all already. You fill me with disgust.

You could’ve known me. You did know me. But what meant more to you? Greed. All can see each and every one of you for what you really are.

You know when the penny dropped? The realisation of how disposable I really am in your life. Honing in on your craft, thinking scraps will be enough to keep me somewhat satisfied, whilst you continuously erase my identity – unnamed, worthless and inhumane. What would you decipher as evil, corrupt and unforgivable? As I think that comes very close.

I remarkably still had your back. You never had mine. One day I was forced to see you for what you really are. You were loyal to one thing though; greed. You remind me of someone, look how that turned out. Texture similar to the desert actually…

Sadly, I think greed reveals your true soul. You see a facade until the true character inside is revealed.

What do you think? Have you witnessed greed changing someone’s character? Or bringing out a new side to them? Comment below!

  1. I never saw greed beyond material possession.
But after I read this, it hit me…some people will take every thing off of you, not because they need it but because they can and they greedy …
They take your love and care and patience and kindness and everything else they can… just because they can

    1. 100%! I couldn’t have worded it better if I tried. Many times it starts with materialism, or maybe those are just some of the first signs of its pre-existing nature which may evolve over time. Greed can be incredibly damaging to all those around like a cyclone.

    1. Very similar to envy actually! It’s incredibly sad when you see it unfold right before your eyes, it’s very difficult to help or intercept as it’s usually a personality trait.
