TV Show Binge: Peaky Blinders

Disclaimer: NO SPOILERS!

I judged this show without having any knowledge of what it’s about. I based it on the title alone. Well wasn’t I wrong?

I was recommended this show, as they were binging on it themselves. I was negative about watching it because my presumptuous self thinks I’m always right. So if I think a show isn’t for me just by the title alone; I won’t watch it. But because they recommended it to me and I’ve been hearing quite a bit about peaky blinders, many are raving about it, I thought I’d give it a go.

Peaky Blinders is a gangster drama set in the lawless streets of post-war Birmingham, on the cusp of the 1920’s. Based on a true story, it’s about a small gang that run the streets of Birmingham in the aftermath of the Great War. The gang is led by Thomas Shelby, an exceptionally bright and violent man who is revered as a war hero for his role as a tunneller.

It’s Tommy’s ambition to remove all competition in the book-making market, allowing him to establish a legitimate monopoly. He believes the gang can only accomplish this through violence and deceit. All the while, Tommy and his family are pursued by a ruthless Northern Irish policeman, Major Chester Campbell. Campbell, a pious, sadistic man, has been sent to Birmingham to wrest control of the city back from the Peaky Blinders, and he’ll stop at nothing to do just that.

Theres only about 6 episodes a series. Each episode lasts an hour, so it makes binging through a series an easy breeze.

It’s so addictive as soon as find yourself growing to love these characters, the show wastes no time putting them in danger, taking full control of your body’s adrenaline output. Peaky Blinders will definately have you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve just completed season one, fascinated and electrified to watch more. I highly recommend this series, as it is quickly becoming one of my favourite dramas. Hands down my favourite period drama! Very well-written, so much so you can’t ever predict what’s to come! P.S. this show has some grisly scenes which many not be for everyone, so I’d advice adult viewing.

Comment below, if you’ve watched this show and what you think of it? Are you interested in watching this? Are you a period drama fan?

  1. Hasn’t made its way to the US, though it likely is only a matter of time before it shows up on public television (late night, of course) or, more likely, BBC America or even HBO.

Sounds fascinating, and it reminds me a bit of what drew so many to The Sopranos. Different era, different place, but the same relentlessly high quality.

    1. Ohhh really they don’t have it over there yet? I wonder if they have it on Netflix, I’m not too sure. You’re right it is almost like The Sopranos, with the amount of people watching it.
I hope you get to watch it soon!

    1. I thought it was on Netflix for people in America to watch, but I wasn’t too sure! I’m guessing it didn’t have you hooked on it then if you forget about it😂😃. It is quite gruesome so it definitely isn’t for everyone!

    1. Funny enough I’m usually quite sceptical on British shows especially films. But this one blew my mind! So so good!

  2. Thomas Shelby will always be his most iconic character, but oppenheimer has solidified Mr. Murphy as the ONE
