What Helps You Unwind?

Busy day; brain wired; consuming thoughts; anxiety; excitement – how do you find your inner calm?

So much is going on in not only our lives but the world. It can make it difficult to gain perspective and take a breather for a moment or two for yourself. Your mind may feel like it’s racing 100mph; where’s the cruise control when you need it?

This can materialise overtime as being stressed, insomnia or general worry. It’s important to learn your personalised metaphorical potion to relieve these feelings and possible worries to file your troubles away until a new day. Control your feelings, don’t let your feelings control you! But wayyy easier said than done, right?

Learn what you like. Learn what interests you, and doesn’t take much to any brainpower. Learn what switches off that organ when you want some time-out. There are many options out there it may take some trial and error but you’ll be getting those golden shuteye hours in no time!

I used to hate chamomile tea; still do! Traditionally your parents would think that’s the only magical way to relax your mind. That, lavender and counting sheep. We’ve moved on since then in the name of meditation apps like ‘Headspace’ and ‘Calm’ with the additional guilty pleasure most disputed of them all – YouTube. Hear me out…

I don’t recommend using mobile phones before bed, as it can have adverse health effects… but if you’re really suffering I personally find a mental vaycay watching a fleeting vlog, ASMR or anything that takes your fancy can help take your mind off any overwhelming thoughts. A nightlight can help sleep hygiene and give your bedroom a warm, cosy feel. NEOM Organics London, have a great wellbeing pod that doubles up as a nightlight and diffuser in one! Pretty fancy I know.

If you’re lucky enough to own a bedroom tv, try leaving your favourite nighttime programme, documentary or film playing in the background. I may be impartial to tv shopping, the voices I find especially calming. I may go as far as to say serene? I know that makes me weird and wayyy beyond my years but who’s judging?!

A heated blanket if you’ve tried all other options, to lay on top of your mattress. But if you get warm or unsettled throughout the night, I possibly wouldn’t recommend. Some may find the slight fire risk alarming resulting in worse unrest. I must say though, it makes me feel snuggly! The Silentnight Comfort Control Electric Blanket is a great affordable option.

But my personal preference is to indulge in a nighttime tea two hours before bed (so you’re not making regular trips to the bathroom). Watching an indulgent soap, followed by a documentary if I’m lucky enough, whilst lying down in the lounge wrapped up in a heated throw. It works every-time and renews my mind, ready for the next day!

A couple of my favourite fruity calming concoctions are Pukka Night Time Berry 20 Tea Bags and Good Earth Hibiscus, Rose & Sweet Berries 15 Tea bags (the latter is much more fruity whereas Pukka’s is more soothing. There’s nothing like a good mild brew to ease your senses!

I hope you’ve found your perfect remedy to relax and find your inner zen. After all, how any hours in a day do we really get for ourselves? One? Two? Take time for you, you deserve it!
