How To Thoroughly Clean Your Makeup Brushes!

Stiff bristles? Breaking out soon after makeup application? Eliminate the bacteria buildup, lingering within your makeup tools by following these steps! Shiny, soft, fresh brushes in no time – yes you heard me correctly!

We all have a tendency to leave our makeup tools to fester. It’s not high on our list of priorities, plus what’s the point if it’ll just get dirty again the next time we apply makeup, right? Defeats the purpose, surely? But we’d happily buy luxury skincare to tighten our pores, and reverse any signs of ageing? Let’s not forget the chemical exfoliants and toners we invest in, to penetrate deep within our pores removing a lot of the gunk that hides beneath the surface. Well that’s where you’re wrong my friend…

In an ideal world, you’re actually supposed to clean your brushes daily. It’s not April fools, I’m being serious! That’s a big/unrealistic ask, I know. So if you can do work up the courage to do the dreaded task at least once weekly, or even once monthly, is much better than never!

Washing makeup brush in the palm of your hand.

Our dead skin cells are shedding constantly. If we don’t keep on top of this quick turnaround, our hair follicles can become blocked, which can lead to the accumulation of breakouts, blackheads and whiteheads, acne, staph infections, fungal infections and many many more. Potentially even mold growing in your makeup brushes. I know your face just grimaced at that!

Bacteria builds up practically everyday, never-mind when we’re currently dealing with a heatwave. Bacteria multiplies in warm, humid conditions. Swirling bacteria onto your face, is a big no no. So how can we clean our makeup brushes and keep on top of their very high maintenance?

  1. Dampen your brushes with warm water. Be cautious to mainly focus on the bristles.
  2. Apply your favourite blush cleanser directly to brush. My favourite is the MAC Brush Cleanser. It disinfects; cleanses and conditions; extends life of brushes. Most of all, it gets all the residue off, leaving your brushes fresh and clean! I usually like swirling the bristles in my palm, so it lathers up giving your brushes a thorough wash. The TLC they’ve been craving! Then rinse with water, ready to dry! Click HERE to buy! – If you don’t have a brush cleanser, just use any shampoo and antibacterial hand soap. Anything will do at this point!
  3. Run the brush along a towel until it no longer distributes any makeup remnants. Usually once you lather up your brushes, no residue is left on my towel, which is a lifesaver.
  4. Lay flat and leave to dry overnight. There’s nothing worse than prematurely using damp brushes, don’t put yourself through it. I’ve been there! This technique also works perfectly for makeup sponges.

Finally, cleaning and sterilising your brushes frequently, saves time, buildup, and helps keep breakouts / skin infections at bay.

    1. It’s crazy when you think our pores are always releasing oils, sebum and dried skin cells, haha it almost mentally scars up from ever applying makeup again!

    1. Once a fortnight is a great regular routine, especially if you are only occasionally wearing makeup as you mentioned. Keeping the buildup at bay is the most important! I have to work up the courage to do it fortnightly or even monthly haha. As long as it’s not annually, we’re winning!😂 So glad you enjoyed this post, Katherine 🤗🤍
