What Is Your Favourite Christmas Movie?

I’ve had a recent awakening, festive movies don’t have to be cheesy and predictable, oh no that’s so last year. There are a few gems that are incredibly touching, saddening at times and remind you just how lucky you are to be loved!

I saw ‘Love Actually’ recently. Yes, I’ve been living on another planet as I hadn’t seen the whole movie before. But it wasn’t any old screening, oh no. Throughout the duration of the film, there was a live orchestra playing in the concert hall, I kid you not. It made the moment all the more special, intimate and impactful, bringing the movie to life almost. It made me wonder, have we been interpreting Christmas movies all wrong and making prejudgments based on categorising them as Christmas mush that have become repetitive year in year out without meaning?

Don’t get it twisted, a large portion of festive films are like Camembert. By the end, they have no meaning other than an unrealistic storyline, meeting a stranger in an airport and spending Christmas with him as you’re snowed in, yada yada yada; happily ever after. Or a classic like ‘Elf’ for example, great film. Touching in places but very unrealistic purely a staple to reignite the warm, fuzzy Christmas spirit in us and boy does it work. That and ‘Home Alone’. Must watch like you’ve necked a strong shot of mulled wine, instant realisation of the time of year!

Saying that, last year I randomly came across a hallmark movie called ‘A Godwink Christmas’ and the story was really like watching a Christmas miracle. And not any made up miracle or fictional dream, oh no.. This film tells the story of a real-life couple married for over 30 years that met in the wildest most magical circumstances you’d think it’s made up. Let me give you the quick backstory…

In the true romance story of the Conovers, Island weather plays the role of the Godwink that brought them together. It seems that all those years ago, Paula Conover flew from her home in St. Louis to Nantucket to consult with a favorite aunt. She was having doubts about accepting a marriage proposal from a suitor in St. Louis. She and her aunt decided to fly to Martha’s Vineyard for the day, but at the last minute her aunt (played by Kathie Lee Gifford in the movie) couldn’t go.

Paula Conover came to the Vineyard on her own to sort things out. That’s when foggy weather began to steer events. Two fog delayed airplanes, one shortage of taxis, and one fortuitous friend’s introduction later, Mr. Conover was squiring his future bride around the Island, discovering the connections that would lead them to marriage.

Fast-forward more than 30 years later, they’re still happily married living in the Charlotte Inn that they own, also known as Martha’s Vineyard. If this isn’t a true Christmas fairytale I don’t know what is!

It’s a truly beautiful story that kept me up for a couple of hours afterwards in awe that moments like these do exist, rare I know. But it reminds you to stay present, trust your heart and embrace the season as you never know what may happen. After all, this is the season for miracles that would otherwise seem unthinkable. Make your wish!

  1. My favourite Christmas movie is Christmas In Connecticut (1945), followed by It’s A Wonderful Life (1946) and Scrooge or A Christmas Carol (1951).

I have noticed that most of my favourite movies were made before the year 1960.

My favourite Christmas movie from recent times is Love Actually which being made in 2002 isn’t so recent I suppose.

I did watch a Hallmark Christmas movie a couple of weeks ago on YouTube whose plot was totally different from any other Hallmark Christmas movie I saw.

And the miracle in it was the healing of a relationship between father and son (adult father and adult son).

Unfortunately I forgot the name of it now.

    1. I don’t think I’ve seen any of your favourite movies, I’ve clearly been living under a rock! I’ll have to add them onto my Christmas watch list as there are only a few days now until the big day🤓🎄.
Older films are always classics, we become way too engrained in modern films on streaming platforms for example nowadays which are made every year, we entirely disregard older movies which is so wrong. Streaming platforms just make it much harder to watch classics as I imagine their main goal is revenue which they can’t maximise as much with classics.

Oh wow that sounds like a very meaningful hallmark film, it’s important for different messages to be relayed rather than the repetitive romantic storylines!
