Who’s excited for the main event, Saturday 22nd January 2023? I know I am! Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among East and Southeast Asian cultures, including Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean communities, among others. This celebratory holiday is usually observed over a period of 12 days. Originally, the holiday began as a time for feasting and to honour household and heavenly creators, as well as ancestors. The New Year typically begins with the first new moon that occurs between the end of January and spans the first 15 days of the first month of the lunar calendar—until the full moon arrives.
One of the 12 animals represented by the Chinese zodiac, the Rabbit symbolises patience and luck. (Note: Each zodiac animal cycles through every 12 years, so people born in, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 and so on, correspond with the rabbit!) Such a significant event is recognised across the globe, in numerous fields like beauty!
Beauty brands are joining in on the festivities by launching limited-edition collections inspired by the zodiac animal, rabbit. I’ve rounded up the best Lunar New Year-themed offerings dressed to the nines in vibrant red and gold packaging, uniquely crafted for the annual holidays.

First up, is the OG, MAC Cosmetics – New Year Shine.
The New Year Shine matte lipsticks (£22/$23) come in four colors, with names representing the luck and opulence associated with Lunar New Year, including “Lookin’ Like Wealth” and “Taupe of the List” could it get any more fitting? The Eyeshadow x 8 palette (£36/$45) centres around warm-toned neutral shades with in eight colors including “Happy Gold Lucky,” “Blessings in Disguise” and “Wishful Pinking.” Whoever created these spin-off play on words shade names need a payrise!
The Extra Dimension Skinfinish highlighter (£32/$44) is a liquid-powder that comes in two iterations: pink that breaks gold and peach that breaks pink, both with a high shine metallic finish. The clump-resistant mascara (£26/$31) comes in a classic black color in special red packaging. The blush retails for £28/$36 and the hydrating finishing spray retails for £28/$34. All in signature red ombre packaging!

Simple, but still giving, this collection features a warm, inviting 18 shade eyeshadow palette. Whether you’re feeling like a gold, peach, rosy or a warm intense smokey eye, this is a great adaptable palette. The products mentioned are available to buy individually and in a series of kits, so you can mix and match your favourite products. The Lunar New Year Everything Kit (at £103/$115) includes the rich vibrant MatteTrance Lipstick in the shade Rouge 8 (£36/$39). Can we just take a moment for what the brand states “debossed with a divine damask motif.” Whatever it’s called, it’s everything!

Charlotte Tilbury’s collection has a slight twist to it. Many of her bestsellers have a limited-edition plum blossom print on the packaging. And possibly one of the cutest thing’s I’ve seen, is the limited-edition lipstick in Captivated (£31/$36), with flowers embossed on the bullet and a bunny cradling a bloom on the case. I saved the best for last! This highly collectable, ultra limited-edition compact powder ($175) will be the focal point of any room it enters. It’ll upstage you on the most memorable days! It’s a one-of-a-kind compact is filled (choose from 5 shades) and refillable with perfecting setting powder. Arrives in an elegant presentation box. Includes a velvety pouch to keep the compact safe. If you’re not in love, I wouldn’t know what to tell you!
