UV Protection For Your Eyes: Why Sunglasses Can Shield Your Eyes From Detrimental Adverse Effects.

Squinting, watering eyes and the infamous hand cover aka hand visor, we’ve all been there. Why wait until it’s too late for us to guard and protect our eyes, limiting exposure to potentially life-changing conditions?

The risk? We vaguely know it. Maybe we like playing with fire, or in this case, a fireball equivalent to the sun. Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause various eye problems including macular degeneration, cataracts and eye cancer. Now that’s worst case scenario, but unnecessary blurry vision, sore, watery, sensitive eyes; isn’t prevention better than cure? Most definitely is and more importantly, not invasive!

Sunglasses are easy, inexpensive depending on which style and/or brand you prefer, and crucially preserve your eyes, lessening the risk of problems mentioned above, arising either now or in the future.

Think back to last time you got sunburnt accidentally. The damage penetrating not only the epidermis (outer skin) but much deeper layers, which can wreak havoc and blast away DNA, found in the upper layer of skin cells. So imagine if your skin turns bright red like a tomato and starts peeling excessively, what would you think it does to your eyes? Just because your eyes can’t show these warning signs, doesn’t mean it should be ignored. We only get one pair of eyes, from birth until we take our last breath, maintain them.

You care for your teeth, why not your eyes? Without your eyes functioning correctly, what good are pearly whites?

There are many great affordable options like H&M, Next, ASOS, Zara. For higher-end, Net-a-Porter, Ray Ban and Sunglass Hut have a top-tier range to choose from. Your local opticians are also a favourable option as if you need prescription lenses fitted into your chosen sunglasses, they’ll take care of all of that while advising the best styles that best complement your face shape.

H&M Cat-Eye sunglasses – £12.99.
Saint Laurent Eyewear Nova Cat-Eye recycled acetate sunglasses – £195.
& Other Stories Cat Eye Sunglasses – £27.00.

Lastly, what matters most, isn’t the brand name. The focal part is ensuring your sunglasses are both UVA and UVB protected, as some will not claim this resulting in an impractical pair that isn’t useful.

What do you think? What’re your favourite pair of sunglasses? Do you own a pair? Do you wear yours often? Is the sun problematic for your eyes? Did you find this post helpful? Comment below!

  1. I agree that sunglasses are a must in the sun. Thanks for the reminder.
I’m sensitive to the sun and light so I have to wear them. I used to be a fanatic of sunglasses; you know, the one who wore one to match her outfit. But not anymore – one or two is good to have 😄

  2. I have like 10 pair of sunglasses, lol 😆 They’re always large because I wear them over my glasses 😁. My eyes are so sensitive I kinda can’t go without sunglasses. Plus when you’re in the sun and you don’t wear them, your eyeballs hurt. It’s such a bad feeling. This is a great post.
