It’s the end of a Kardashian era! Let’s have a look back at one of the most controversial families in the world! And see why it’s ending in 2021.
2007- The Beginning to Now
Momager Kris Jenner and executive producer Ryan Seacrest, wanted to recreate the success of ‘The Osbournes’ – and they have certainly succeeded. 14 years on air, one of the longest reality tv shows ever, KUWTK was definitely a good hit in their bank accounts all round, most recently signing a $150 million deal for a 5 seasons up to 2019.
We’ve seen it all. From Kim’s Playboy photoshoot, to Kim’s divorce after just 72 days of marriage. I’m sure anyone would say we’ve all been on a rollercoaster with the Kardashians/Jenners. We’ve seen the highs, lows, and everything in between – like 10 mini Kardashian/Jenner’s. From Kris’ husband, Bruce Jenner coming out as transgender after hiding his truth for many years. It’s almost like we’ve been an extra member of the Kardashian/Jenner klan. In an odd way, you feel about 5% of what it must actually be like going through all these different life events!
More recently, Kourtney and Scott splitting up, and Tristan repeatedly cheating Khloe Kardashian, the first time when she was 9 months pregnant, and the second time just a few months later when he was canoodling Jordyn Woods, a VERY close family friend, virtually family. To Kylie becoming into a billionaire. They share all these private and challenging moments that I can imagine must feel embarrassing at times, for a pay check. But when do you say no?
Money won’t seem as dazzling as it once was. You have millions or billions in your bank account. Having camera men in your home following you around all the time must start to feel excessive. As now, you really don’t need the money. Of course it’s lovely to have millions just rolling into your account. But when you’ve already hit the jackpot, the money must just feel somewhat futile.
Why is the show over?
Concerns were sparked earlier this year when Kanye West – Kim’s husband, announced his bid to run for presidency. The Kardashian family were reportedly ‘very concerned’ about Kanye, who appeared to be ‘in the middle of a serious bipolar episode’ and posted countless Twitter rants during the same period. Though he disputes he’s going through an ‘episode’. So it’s not sounding like everyone is on the same page here.
A source revealed that Kim doesn’t want her reality TV series to document any of Kanye’s bipolar episode. Kim has also banned the show from profiling her children during this time in case they watch it later.
Declining Viewing Figures
It has been well-reported in recent years that TV ratings for the Kardashian’s show have dwindled in comparison to the programme’s late noughties hey day, when it attracted more than four million live viewers.
Following its premiere in 2007 the attention-grabbing reality show was continually on the rise until it reached its peak three years later during the season four final which pulled in on average 4.8 million viewers.
At its peak, 10.5 million viewers tuned in to watch Kim’s ill-fated wedding to Kris Humphries in 2011, call it a royal reality wedding if you will!
However NBCUniversal’s E! network may no longer want to pay top dollar for a show now its live viewership has dropped by more than 3 million viewers.
The 18th and most recent season of the E! hit show, which was cut short due to the coronavirus outbreak, enticed just 1 million viewers during it’s premiere earlier this year. Falling by 400,000 compared to the previous series.
A huge reason for the viewer rates dwindling is that we hear whats happening much faster on newspapers and social media apps. That’s something a reality show filmed many months in advance, can’t compete with.
Family Members Refusing To Film
Earlier in the year, Kourtney confirmed that she’s taking a step back from the reality blockbuster. She hasn’t been happy filming for a while, and doesn’t find the show fulfilling. Kourtney revealed she wants to ‘limit the exposure’ of her kids, which means less filming for her. It’s interesting to see how this was confirmed only a few months ago, and yesterday Kim confirmed that the last season will be aired early next year. How can you have a show called ‘Keeping up with the Kardashians, ‘if you’re a Kardashian down?!
Kourtney’s sister Kylie has also been open about her reluctance to film and has appeared less and less on recent episodes of the programme. Kylie, began filming when she was just nine years old, has also made it clear she doesn’t want her daughter Stormi, two, to be shown on the TV show.
